Stacey wiped her streaming eyes. She was so angry about a lot of things, one of them being that Ken had made her redundant. She thought it was because she kept refusing his offers to go and stay at the hotel and he was angry, punishing her for it. She’d maintained her cover all this time, as had Owen and Charlie, her journalists who were known as Silas and Vlad while at what she now knew was The Coterie. Ken had no idea who they were. He didn’t bother himself with employees other than the main editors, like Stacey.

It was as if fate had smiled on her, drawing her attention to the ad one of the interns had compiled for the paper: Bodyguards wanted. The address had been printed below it, and it was for Ken’s hotel. What did he need bodyguards for?

Owen and Charlie had already been looking into things but hadn’t discovered anything. She’d sworn them to secrecy, saying they mustn’t talk about this to any other employee, and they’d been more than happy to agree. They produced their usual pieces for the paper so it looked like they were out and about getting local stories, but for the most part, they trawled online, searching for anything to do with blood donations that weren’t legal.

They’d got the jobs under false names, false National Insurance numbers, easily obtained from a dodgy bloke who also dealt in drugs, someone Stacey had investigated in the past, and the real truth behind that place had come to light. They hadn’t checked in with her for a while, which was worrying, especially now she knew Ken ran a cult and brainwashed people to believe they were vampires.

She switched her phone on, and a series of bleeps signalled she’d received quite a few messages since she’d turned it off for a bit of peace.

Charlie: We’re out. Had to leave because it’s getting dangerous. On our way back now.

Charlie: Are you there? Everything okay?

Charlie: I haven’t long switched my phone on. He was getting suspicious with me carrying it around all the time. Just saw your message. You’ve been made redundant? Do you think he knows what we’ve been doing?

Charlie: I’m getting worried now. Why won’t you answer me?

She thumbed in her reply: Sorry, just got these. No, I doubt he knows I’m involved. I think it’s more to do with me not going to stay there so he can lure me into his fucking cult. What do you mean, dangerous? Ring me!

A moment later, her phone trilled, and she swiped to answer. “Are you both all right?”

“Yep,” Charlie said. “Got you on speaker. Owen’s driving. We got out just in time, I reckon. Ken-Louis went into Scudderton, so we fucked off. Nerezza said he hypnotised her. That she thinks those chocolates have something in them. He told us he’s going to kill her after she’s murdered her fucking donor.”

“Oh my God!”

“The stupid cow dumped a load of blood on the beach in Scudderton, and he found out—it was in the papers.
